The greatest thing Kelly and I recently discovered was how easy and delicious it is to make home made bagels. Right now, they are my go to bread for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. These are whole wheat bagels and last time I made them I threw in some garlic powder to kick it up a notch. Would probably work great if you adding dehydrated garlic or onion. Sorry for the poor picture quality, Kelly has the camera in Japan, so I'm using my cell phone.
Homemade Bagels with Homemade Blueberry Conserve
The recipe is after the jump
Here is my recipe:
1 Cup + 2 TBSP water
3 Cups whole wheat flour
1 TSP salt
1 TBSP Sugar
1 TBSP Honey
1 TBSP Olive Oil
1 1/2 TSP Dry Yeast
Make the dough how ever you know how. We go the bread machine route.
After the dough is ready, divide the dough into the amount of bagels you want to make. I find that 8 bagels are the perfect size for this recipe, we started off with 12 and then 10, and ended up liking the 8 count for our eating skills.
Take each dough part, ball it up and make em into bagel shapes. My technique is to roll it long, loop it, and then smush the ends together and the shape it that way.
Once you get your bagels into shape, cover them with some paper towel, and let them rise for 15 minutes.
While that is going on, bring to a boil 3 quarts of water and 1/3 cup of honey.
Once boiling and bagels have risen for 15 minutes. Through the bagels in to the water and let boil for about 45 seconds a side. I do them 2 at a time to keep it manageable. When they start boiling, they poof up and get nice and big. After both sides are done, if you want, you can dip them in poppy or sesame seeds or any other type of topping you might want, i like em plain personally.
Arrange them onto a baking sheet and place them in a preheated 400 degree oven for about 22 minutes.
Let them cool on a wire rack and you are done!
